THE CRUMBAUGH FAMILY

Margaret Crumbaugh Sturman

George Crumbaugh was born in Ohio and is said to be one of the original settlers of Wayne County, Ohio. He and is wife Mary (Polly) Helmick had seven children;James, William, Margaret, Mary Ann, Sophia, Harriet, and Nancy Jane. The family seemed to be quite well to do. They owned lots of land that they sold, shared and fought over. The only verified photos I have of the Crumbaughs are of my great, great grandmother Margaret.

Rumor has it that when Thomas Jr. brought home a young woman he was courting, his mother Margaret drove her away with a buggy whip. Thomas never married and was living with his mother when she died.
Margaret was a very stern woman and was reportedly quite mean. However she took in foster children when she was older. Two of her sons never married and Margaret, jr. had no children.
A story is told of how Margaret disguised herself as a man and joined the Union Army when she heard her husband had been injured. She fought in his company until she was discovered.
The name Crumbaugh means sour stomache. Almost all of Margaret's pictures look as if she has one.
After Thomas died Margaret moved back to Illinois and shows up in several of the census reports there.

Name given by Watson family members as "Krumbaugh" but find no records anywhere with that spelling. "Crumbaugh" and Krumbach" seem best alternates Rumors: Her family from Penn. state "colony"? "Pennsyvania Dutch?" (Amish?) German ancestors?
some involvement with Civil War, perhaps as a nurse.?

Rumor has it that Margaret was paid $500 to take the place of a bankers son in the Union army. She enlisted as a man from Illinois. She may have taken the name Sam. In the enlistment records of the 126th cavalry there is a M. Crumbaugh listed. Could that be Margaret?

Note: This story is not true. Margaret did follow Thomas to Vicksburg and she stayed there as did many other wives and families as camp followers. She had tiny babies at the time and there would have been no way she could have been a soldier.
